The Calmdogs Smart uses two: a microphone and a vocal cord vibration sensor. Both have to fire at the same time before the collar responds, which means it's reading the vibration in your dog's own throat to confirm it's actually them barking. That distinction matters if you live somewhere with ambient noise, have more than one dog, or have had bad experiences with collars that seemed to fire randomly.
Five modes and how to choose between them
The M button on the collar cycles through five response modes. One sensitivity dial (0–5) controls how quickly the collar responds — specifically, how many barks within a ten-second window it takes to trigger:

The auto-pause — why it matters
If the collar triggers six times in a row, it automatically pauses for 30 seconds. This is a feature worth paying attention to: a dog that's in an anxious or highly aroused state doesn't benefit from continuous back-to-back corrections — it makes the anxiety worse, not better. The pause gives your dog a moment to settle before the collar becomes active again. The digital display also shows a low-spray warning as you approach the 25-spray capacity, so you're not caught out with an empty canister mid-session.
Battery, charging, and water resistance
The BarkCalm Smart charges via Type-C — the same cable as most modern phones — and reaches full charge in about two hours. Battery life is up to 15 days on normal use, though this varies depending on how often the collar triggers. It's IP65 rated for splash resistance, which covers rain, mud, and the enthusiastic water bowl drinker — but remove it before swimming or bathing. IP65 handles water from any direction at low pressure; it's not designed for submersion.
Is it right for your dog?
The BarkCalm Smart works well for healthy adult dogs over six months old, from 6 lbs to 120 lbs. It's not suitable for every dog though, and it's worth being honest about this before buying:
It's not recommended for aggressive dogs, breeds with long noses or very long necks (where the spray may not reach the muzzle effectively), or dogs with a significantly reduced sense of smell — since the citronella spray relies on scent perception to work as intended. What stood out to us
The dual sensing is the feature that separates this from the other automatic collars in our range.
