If your dog's barking is testing your patience, your sleep, or your neighbours' goodwill, you've probably already tried the usual advice. The Calmdogs collar was built by Calmshops, a family-run dog training business based in Oxfordshire, for exactly this problem: dogs who bark out of habit, anxiety, or excitement, and owners who want a correction tool that's effective without being harsh.
How it actually works
Most bark collars rely on a microphone alone, which means they can be set off by other dogs barking, doors slamming, or loud traffic. Calmdogs uses vocal cord vibration sensing alongside sound detection, so it's reading the vibration in your dog's own throat to confirm they're the one barking before it responds. That's the difference between a collar that nags your dog for noises they didn't make, and one your dog actually learns to trust.
5 modes, 5 sensitivity levels — built to match your dog, not the other way around
One button (M) cycles through five response modes, and a separate sensitivity dial (0–5, with 0 as a safe test setting) controls how many barks it takes to trigger a response:
- Level 1 – Beep only (responds after 5 barks in 10 seconds)
- Level 2 – Vibration only (4 barks in 10 seconds)
- Level 3 – Beep + Spray (3 barks in 10 seconds)
- Level 4 – Beep + Vibration (2 barks in 10 seconds)
- Level 5 – Beep + Spray + Vibration (1 bark in 10 seconds)
As a rule of thumb: start low and only increase sensitivity if your dog isn't responding, rather than starting at level 5.
Smart enough to know when to stop
A built-in counter on the digital display tracks spray use and automatically pauses the collar for 30 seconds if it triggers six times in a row, so an anxious or overexcited dog never gets overwhelmed by back-to-back corrections. The display also flashes a low-spray warning once you're nearing the 25-spray capacity, so refills don't catch you off guard.
Built for daily life, not just demos
- Type-C fast charging: full charge in 2 hours, lasting up to 15 days of normal use
- IP65 splash resistance for rain, mud, and slobber (remove before swimming, bathing, or heavy downpours)
- Soft 24-inch nylon strap, adjustable to fit dogs from 6 to 120 lbs
Is this collar right for your dog?
It's designed for healthy adult dogs over 6 months old, of any size within the range above. It's not recommended for aggressive dogs, breeds with long noses or necks, or dogs with a significantly reduced sense of smell, since the citronella spray relies on scent perception to work as intended. If you're unsure whether it suits your dog's temperament or breed, we're happy to talk it through before you buy.
Good to know before you order: the citronella spray cartridge is sold separately, so you'll need one to use the spray modes (beep and vibration modes work straight out of the box).
Common questions
Does the spray hurt my dog? No. Citronella spray is a scent-based deterrent, not a corrective shock, and it's widely used as a humane alternative to shock collars.
How long does the battery last? Around 15 days of normal use per 2-hour charge, depending on how often the collar is triggered.
What if my dog barks at something legitimate, like a delivery driver? The vocal cord sensor reduces false triggers, but no bark collar can fully distinguish context, so it's best used alongside basic training rather than as a complete fix on its own.
Can I use it without buying spray refills? Yes; set it to beep or vibration mode and it'll work without any spray.
