Waterproof Dog Rain Coat & Reflective Pet Vest – Durable & Stylish

Living in Oxfordshire, we are not short of opportunities to test a waterproof dog coat. Figo has been wearing this one since last autumn and it's earned its place on the hook by the door — which is the most honest review any piece of kit can get.

How it's made and how it performs in the wet

The coat is 100% polyester with a water-resistant finish that repels rain and light splashes without soaking through. It is water-resistant rather than fully waterproof, and it is worth being clear about that: a long spell in continuous heavy rain will eventually get through, and a dog who is already soaked will still be wet underneath. It's not a heavy waxed-cotton shooting coat — it's lightweight and close-fitting, which means it doesn't restrict movement and dries quickly when you get back inside. For typical British rain on a daily walk, it does the job well. For standing in a field in a downpour for an extended period, you'd want something more substantial — but that's not really what this coat is for.

Reflective strips and low-light visibility

The coat has reflective accents built into the chest strap design, which catch headlights and torchlight at a meaningful distance. This is genuinely useful rather than decorative — early morning and late evening walks in winter mean a lot of time in low light, and anything that makes a dog more visible to drivers is worth having. The reflective detailing isn't subtle, which is the point.

The chest strap design and how it fits

The vest fastens with adjustable chest straps rather than pulling over the head or requiring four separate leg holes — which sounds like a minor detail until you've tried to get a wriggling dog into a traditional rain coat at 7am. The adjustable fit accommodates different chest and body shapes across the size range. The sizes are cut and shaped for dogs: M to 2XL, covering a wide range of breeds. A rough guide: M suits smaller breeds like spaniels and terriers; L and XL cover medium breeds; 2XL is built for larger dogs. Measure along your dog's back and around the chest and match that to the size chart rather than guessing from breed, because the same breed varies a lot. If you're between sizes, size up — the straps give you room to adjust down.

Figo's verdict

Figo is a cocker spaniel, which means he has strong opinions about most things and will make them known. He tolerated this coat from the first wear without the sustained protest we've had from other items of dog clothing, which we put down largely to the chest strap design — it goes on quickly and doesn't involve manhandling his legs. The reflective strips have been visible from across the road on dark mornings, which is reassuring. After a muddy walk it wipes clean easily; after a wetter walk we hang it up and it dries within an hour or so. It's held up well over several months of regular use.

Care and maintenance

The polyester construction means it's straightforward to keep clean — wipe down after muddy walks, or machine wash when needed. It dries quickly and doesn't need ironing or any particular care beyond that. Check the chest straps aren't twisted before putting it on your dog, and adjust the fit if your dog has gained or lost weight since you last used it — a coat that's come loose won't stay in the right position on a walk.
