Can a collar help when my dog barks while I'm out? Yes, if your dog is barking at something. An automatic collar reacts to the bark by itself, so it works while you are out, whether your dog is barking at the post, at people passing or at noises outside. If your dog seems upset at being left — howling, pacing, chewing doors or accidents indoors — our Calmdogs calming chews and pheromone calming collar are the better fit, and it is worth mentioning to your vet if it carries on.
What about fireworks and thunder? None of these collars, and we would rather say so than sell you one. A dog who is frightened of a noise is not misbehaving, and spraying or vibrating a frightened dog adds something unpleasant to a situation they cannot escape. The calming chews and the pheromone collar can sit alongside a plan from your vet or a qualified behaviourist.
Good to know
A dash means the maker does not publish a figure. Where a size range, a remote range or a water rating is missing, it is because the manufacturer does not state one and we are not going to invent it. Ask us and we will check the one in front of us.
*Range figures are a best case. They are the open-ground maximum from the maker's own specification. Walls, hedges, buildings and weather cut them down a long way, so treat them as the furthest the remote will ever reach rather than the distance to plan around.
Spray in the box. “Part-filled” means around 30 sprays. Our citronella refill can fits most spray collars; what matters is the nozzle, so check it against the photos on the refill page.
Water ratings. IPX5, IPX6 and IP65 mean rain and splashing. IPX7 means the part tested survived a metre of water for half an hour. Neither means your dog can swim in it.
Wear time. Keep continuous wear under twelve hours, check the skin underneath, and clean the sensor area regularly.
